What over-the-counter remedy should I use to get rid of Planter’s Wart?

Unfortunately I have a couple Planter’s Warts on the bottom of my right foot and my doctor told me I can get rid of them with over-the-counter remedies from the drug stores. What are these remedies?

If you have a regular wart on your knee, etc. see the chemist for some wart paint. You will have a good chance of killing a soft wart with a strong paint. The same is true of warts on the non-weight bearing parts of the foot such as the top or the arch. On the bottom of your foot, you have only a very small chance of killing a wart because the architecture of the skin has been mutated by the wart virus and will be very tough. It would be in your best interests to see a doctor or podiatrist early. As time passes, the wart will grow bigger. With each failed attempt to kill it, it will get more likely to spread, angrier and more difficult to kill. If you (or the Dr) make a scar through the wart but don’t kill it all, future attempts to kill it are made much more difficult as wart cells harbouring the infectious virus can hide away in clefts in the scar tissue and be very hard to eradicate.

Because warts are composed of a mutation of your own skin, anything that we do to the wart, we do to you. The blood vessels that run into a wart are your blood vessels and the nerves are your nerves. Unfortunately, this means that there is no completely painless way to treat the problem. It is very important to treat the wart as soon as you notice it. Warts grow bigger over time and delaying treatment will usually mean a more painful job. To be rid of a wart, it must be all killed. The particle that initially infected you would have been one million times smaller than a drop of water and if anything even this size is left behind, the wart will regrow.

Burning or cutting out a wart is acceptable if it is not on the part of the foot that touches the ground. If it is, these methods shouldn’t be used as they will leave a scar that will probably cause trouble in later life. Chemical cautery is certainly the most friendly of approaches for removal. Depending on the size of the lesion, the wart may be shrunk first with a three day application of a slow acting chemical without any pain. When the size is more manageable, the wart is then killed with a quick acting chemical which takes just a couple of minutes and is done under local anaesthetic injection. This approach is also likely to be the least painful as the chemical forms an immediate scab over the area, protecting the wound and at the same time cauterizing the nerve endings. Scarring of the foot is unlikely as the chemical used shows a strong preference for burning wart tissue rather than skin tissue. Freezing is another option. It will usually require multiple applications and is generally more painful than chemical cautery, both at the time of application and over the following days. It does not require an injection.
