How to choose a summer camp
Choosing a summer camp for your child can be a difficult and sometimes overwhelming. Since there is a seemingly endless variety of choices to consider, which is the ideal camp for your child's interests, personality and schedule loaded, can be formidable. In addition, as a parent, you have the responsibility for the camp you choose for your child is operated on a safe and appropriate to your child's age and skill levels.
The following is a checklist of the Selection Camp parents to consider when examining the possibilities of their summer camp for kids:
1. Identify the focus of the program camp.
Each camp has a different philosophy and program emphasis. Some camps promote structured group activities, while others give campers more individual freedom to choose different activities that they like. Some camps offer activities strictly traditional, while others may focus exclusively on sport, drama or surfing. Or perhaps your child thrive in an environment competitive camp while another child would do better to participate in non-competitive camp. Knowing the personality of your child, interests, personality traits and learning style, you can better identify the right camp for you.
2. Confirm that the camp is accredited by the American Camp Association.
To obtain validation by the American Camp Association (ACA), camps must meet up to 300 industry standards of best practice relating to camper health safety, supervision and planning and implementing activities that are essential to the operation of a camp's.
3. Ask about background the camp director.
To ensure that the camp director is qualified, make sure that or she meets the minimum standards set by the ACA. These standards recommend that the camp director holds a bachelor, has deep experience in the camp administration, conducted a training during the past three years, and is at least 25 years.
4. Camp counselor ratios. To ensure your child receives individual attention and supervision he needs for his age, to compare the camp counselor to camper ratio to standards ACA. For day camps, General Reports range from 8:1 for 6, 7 and 8, at 10:1 for 9 to 14, and 12:1 for campers ages 15 to 17. For camps, the rate of general recommendation is 6:1 for 7 and 8 years, 8:1 for ages 9 to 14 years and 10:1 for campers ages 15 to 17.
(Please note above mentioned child ratio standards of general counsel are the ACA MINIMUM recommendations and may vary depending on different situations and / or conditions. In addition, there may be additional standards for specific programs and / or activities where more supervision May be prudent, if not necessary. Therefore, you should use your own discretion and do your own research decide what is appropriate for you and your child.)
5. Ask about the staff of the camp counselors your child can or break camp experience of a child.
In addition to facilitating camp activities, counselors serve as role models and should be reliable, trustworthy and show enthusiasm for their work. For security reasons, counselors should also be CPR and First Aid-Certified and have undergone criminal background checks prior to employment by the camp.
6. Housing for special needs.
If your child has special needs due to allergies or other medical condition, be sure to ask if the camp is equipped to address these requirements.
7. Find out how the camp handles discipline.
As in any organization, rules must be followed and the disciplinary approach, the camp should be fair, reasonable and open communication. Positive reinforcement, a sense of fair play and assertive role modeling are important things to look for. If the penalties for certain violations, the camp staff must apply fairly, calmly and without unnecessary criticism.
8. Check references camp.
References can provide an overview of other experiments have been to a camp, and they are an important check on the background of a camp and reputation. Before choosing a camp, the camp director should be willing to provide references upon request.
Good luck choosing camp and have a great summer!
